Get It Out Of My Head!

Wednesday, August 31st, 2005

The problem when you’re chasing (the right) gurus is, you get a flood of ideas. You have much more ideas, thoughts and aha! moments than time or resource to do them. You know what happens then? Burn out! Fast and furious. I reviewed a few of my Traffic Secrets videos lately and I find myself burning out again! It’s not a problem with the course but more with life or rather my life. So… I thought I better do something about it and get serious with my organization.

Hey I’m no slacker when it comes to organization but since the kids came along everything I ever known about organization is out the window and whatever’s left leaked through the floor boards :-D and when I started to learn all these things that are actually making me real money, things changed too. Obviously I need a different kind of organization technique. Something more natural, something more less restrictive to cater for a family oriented life.

So… I bought a product called NoteStudio. It’s a software that has both desktop and palm versions so I can literally enter my data everywhere and yes my PDA goes everywhere with me. Now NoteStudio is not a traditional organization tool in fact it’s more of a WiKi. There is no ’structure’ because you make the structures. The best way to describe this thing is – it’s like building a personal website with pages for your ideas, pages for your to dos, pages for your projects, tracking stuff etc. It take some getting used to and I love it because of it’s unstructured nature. Yet, I wasn’t quite doing things right. Through NoteStudio folks, I was introduced to this whole ‘revolution’ called GTD.

GTD is short of Getting Things Done and is based on the book Getting Things Done by David Allen whom FastCompany calls “The personal productivity guru” – yeah another guru in my life. I just received the book last Saturday and am slowly going through it now – thanks to Katrina I got distracted. It’s still too early to tell but have a feeling this is the ‘IT’ I’m looking for. And… now I’m a bit dumbfounded because I realize I literally have to change my lifestyle/thinking. Gotta get all these thoughts, ideas and ’stuff’ out of my head and onto paper (or pixels) – John Reese calls it the ‘Brain Dump’. It’s going to be one big overhaul. I shudder to think but desperately need to. Will keep you posted.

Meanwhile, anyone tried GTD?

New Guru!

I have a new guru in my life :-) and this is a bunch of ‘gurus’. Well actually it’s a outsource site www.guru.com and my experience with them is quite an interesting turn of events. When I first started working from home the first inclination was – sell my services and what better way than to freelance. Now this was right around the last legs of the dot com bust era and I was plugged into Guru.com looking for work. Back then all these freelance sites were still free for both employer and freelancer. I even landed my first ever customer there.

Now I’m back there – as an employer. I found a (so far) great writer for a great price. Just awarded her the project and am excited to get my project off the ground. It’s also so liberating to know I’ll be getting quite a bit done without having to do it myself :-) .

Anyway, Guru.com has been a positive experience for me all the way round. Why didn’t I use Elance? Well… after so many marketing gurus teach about outsourcing and mentioning elance everywhere, I figured it would be a tad crowded. I also found Guru.com to be more ‘private’ in the way the projects are opened. The other nice thing is, they have a 2% kick back program which you can use towards future projects, recommended. I think I’ll be sticking with them for a little while.

Earned More Than I Thought

Did my books over a week ago. Pleased to say I’ve actually doubled by monthly income compared to the same time last year. By now I already made more than I did all of last year so that is nice. It’s hard to see things like that when you’re working ‘in the trenches’ everyday. So this monthly accounting is much needed to remind/set straight where one is headed. I hate to do accounting but looking at it like a monthly progress report makes it a lot easier.

This is of course pleasing news. I’m still far from my (very lofty) goals but at least this is progress and as my hubby reminds me, the year is not yet over :)
